Optical

Technology traditionally used in encoders.

More information about Optical

Using a coded glass disk is a traditional way of converting rotating movements into digital pulses in, for example, encoders, regardless of whether they have an incremental or absolute function. The technology is based on having a light source on one side of the glass plate and a receiver on the other side. When the code disc is precision marked with the desired number of turns, the light can be detected on unmarked surfaces, and thus converted into pulses. This in turn can be used for speed and position measurement.
