Length measurement is possible by using a rotary or linear encoder. Depending on the possibility of mounting sensors in an application, rotary sensors on a rotating shaft or linear sensors on, for example, a linear unit can be used. Another possibility is to use a encoder in combination with a wire module. A wire sensor consists of a module with wire wound on a drum. The drum has a rotating shaft that enables mounting of a traditional encoder. When the wire is pulled out, the encoder rotates and by converting each pulse you can get information about length, speed or position. A wire module is easy to retrofit in an existing application in a simple way.
