Joystick with 0–5 VDC or CAN-bus?

Our joystick JHT comes as standard with 0.5-4.5 VDC output. However, the use of CAN bus is since some time widely used, especially in vehicles.
The advantage of connecting the joystick directly to the CAN bus is, among other things, that fewer analog and digital I/O ports are required in the machine, which means less cables, weight, cost and space savings. To minimize the risk of disturbance, various CAN-bus interfaces are also available as options for joystick JHT.

Controller Area Network (CAN) is widely used in automotive industries and other industrial applications for communication between different nodes.
Several higher layer protocols, such as J1939, CANopen, DeviceNet, and NMEA2000, are developed based on CAN for various application areas.
SAE J1939 is mainly designed for heavy-duty vehicles and communication between electric vehicles and charging stations, whiles CANopen, on the other hand, is designed for industrial automation.
Both J1939 and CANopen communities are aware of the need for intercommunicating with each other. In the J1939 standard, two proprietary messages are reserved for supporting CANopen behaviors. There are also several application notes published in the draft version by the CANopen community to extend CANopen devices with a J1939 interface. However, both approaches require modification in the software.
To allow intercommunication between CANopen devices and J1939 nodes without changing their software, a communication gateway is required.
